Moving Beyond the Page 6-8 – Concept 1, Unit 3, Lesson 3: Classifying Animals

Today we actually learned the 6 major groups of animals: fish, birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians and insects. We cut the animal cards from the Student book and organized them into their corresponding categories. We used a variety of colored construction paper (since I didn’t have any yarn to create circles as instructed), so AA placed each animal where it belonged.

Classifying animals by groups

This lesson extended for two days with multiple activities about animals:  ‘the favorite animal’, ‘animal comparisons’, ‘humans being mammals’, etc. AA chose to compare himself against a frog (a different animal group) using a Venn Diagram, and himself against a dog (another mammal) also using a Venn Diagram. He did a great deal of writing.
